A short clinical crown may lead to poor retention of restoration and may lead to frequent breaking and dislodgement. Crown lengthening procedure is done to increase the clinical tooth length to enhance retention of restoration without disturbing gum health.
Clinical tooth length can be increased by gingivectomy, apically displaced flap with or without resective osseous surgery, or surgical extrusion of tooth. The decision about procedure is taken after clinical and radiographic evaluation.
